Two enlightenment visions in a process against brotherhoods: the Holy Burial of Granada in 1777-1778

The judgment initiated in Granada in 1777 between the brotherhoods of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad and Nuestra Señora de las Tres Necesidades regarding the Holy Friday procession is shown as a field of debate around popular religiosity. This process is contemporary of the general file against the brotherhoods that was processed in the Council of Castile. For this reason, beyond the local dispute, the Granada procession fully entered the sphere of the reforms of the Enlightenment. It is interesting to analyze the process and the context in which it takes place, in order to understand the different positions regarding the practices of popular religiosity and, specifically, in this case, the points of view of the Archbishop of Granada and the City Council.
