The first Marquis of Campotéjar, Pedro Granada Venegas Manrique, owned an important collection of por-traits which, after his death, occupied the north pavilion of the Generalife Palace. The gallery was made up of portraits of components of the Granada Venegas dynasty, illustrious figures and members of the Hispanic monarchy. After the cessation of the lawsuit initiated by the Spanish State against the house of Campotéjar, the gallery was divided. The royal portraits remained in the national territory and those belonging to the members of the Granada-Venegas family were expatriated. In this work we have studied a portrait of don Juan de Austria who was identified as Carlos V. The descriptions made by travelers of the time have been compared, models that inspired the copy have been identified, the significance of this mistake and, finally, hypotheses that led to the incorrect classification have been raised.
